Don’t forget the wine bar!

Here at Sevardi tapas and wine bar, we’re accustomed to hearing our customers express their delight at our delicious Spanish and Italian tapas. We also love them to sample the entire, authentic experience which in the wine bar involves a glass of our favourite grapes of course!

Wine and tapas go way back. Stories of the origin of the Spanish tradition abound, with some saying that tapas started out as a way for bar owners to disguise the smell of bad wine. Others suggest that Alfonso X mandated taverns to offer a small snack, or ‘tapa’ with every beverage purchased after he fell ill from drinking too much wine between meals.

Whichever story you believe, the correct wine, carefully chosen, can really enhance the flavour of tapas. To help you out, we’ve picked out three of our most popular tapas dishes and highlighted the type of wine you should be looking for to accompany them:

Seafood

Sevardi is located just minutes away from the coast, which means we can always offer our customers the freshest of fish produce. Wash your gambas a la plancha (grilled shrimp) or ceviche down with a nice glass of white to help balance the flavours. Some fish dishes, such as shellfish, go well with full-bodied reds. So don’t be afraid to ask the sommelier for a recommendation on a bottle of merlot or pinot noir.

Meaty dishes

Chorizo, albondigas (meatballs) and ham are tapas staples, and to fully bring out their complex flavours and textures, you’re best asking for a fino or maranzino sherry. Both of these variants are pale, dry and white in nature, so are easy to consume slightly chilled. Alternatively, you could opt for a rioja, served cellar cool.

Salty dishes

Olives, anchovies, cheese and almonds are a nibbler’s dream, but their salty nature requires a crisp, light white as a counter-balance. Most Spanish or Italian whites will do the job here, but it’s best to avoid chardonnay if you don’t want a dry palate.

To savour a glass of our finest grapes, just pay a visit to our wine bar, after you’ve wolfed down your tapas selection!
